Contributing Author: Nicole N

As many of you already know, the solution to painful period pain is different for everybody. Some girls find relief after going on birth control, yet some other girls experience other debilitating symptoms while on the pill: nausea, headaches, bloating, weight gain, abnormal bleeding, breast tenderness, and irritability. It is quite a trial and error when it comes to finding the right birth control for you, and that’s a process that could take months.

This is why more females are seeking out natural remedies for their period pain.Supplements, acupuncture, herbs, essential oils, and turmeric are just a few ways to aid in mother nature’s monthly gift.

When it comes to supplements,Omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish oil, help to lower inflammation.Calcium citrate provides your body with the calcium needed for healthy bones while maintaining muscle tone. Although if you’re taking a calcium citrate supplement,Vitamin D can help your body use the calcium to reduce inflammation.Vitamin E inhibits the release of arachidonic acid and its conversion to prostaglandin - chemicals in the body that are involved in inflammation and pain. Lastly,Magnesium helps to reduce menstrual pain by relaxing the smooth muscle of the uterus, and by reducing the prostaglandins that cause period pain.

Acupunctureis recommended by the National Institute of Health, either by itself or along with other treatments, to aid in menstrual pain. According to Medical News Today, a study found that the women undergoing acupuncture more frequently experienced more significant improvements in period pain intensity and related symptoms, as well as overall quality of life.

A natural remedy is best if you can find it.

Essential oils are other plant-based aids that might just help you find relief from period pain and other PMS symptoms.Lavender essential oil is most commonly used as a sleep aid but is also helpful with period pain relief. It contains relaxing properties that encourage muscles to ease and release tension while helping improve blood flow and reduce discomfort.Clary sage essential oil helps promote calmness and relaxation. It is also known as a natural pain reliever and has been found to ease stomach problems typically associated with PMS and rebalance hormones that may be out of whack.Marjoram essential oil also helps to reduce period pain and inflammation by limiting muscle spasms.

While it never hurts to try these natural remedies for period pain, it is always best to speak with your doctor to try to find the best solution for you.
